The small Arbersee

Hiking in the Bavarian Forest

Anyone who has ever seen the small Arbersee from the Großer Arber must experience this jewel in the Bavarian Forest.

It is well hidden and far away from large tourist roads in a corner of the forest below the King of the Bavarian Forest. You have to look for it and you will only find it if you walk along one of the beautiful hiking trails.

The lake originated as a Karsee in the ice age. Standing meltwater, which could not run off, formed the basis for the charming mountain lake. A special feature of the lake are the so-called "floating islands".  They were created when the lake was dammed up in the 1880s to create the Holztrift. Thereby the soil layer loosened itself from the roots to vagabond as islands. Today these islands are between one and a half to three and a half meters thick and offer space and food to relatively large trees and bushes.

Due to its special location in the middle of dense forests, the small Arbersee is a popular destination for excursions, especially since there are also refreshment possibilities in the Seehaus or in the somewhat distant Mooshütte. The lake is especially beautiful in autumn when it becomes the Indian Summer of the Bavarian Forest.

You can reach the lake only by hiking or by taking the small Arberseebahn from Lohberghütte. You can walk around the lake mainly from the parking lot near Sommerau, from the Mooshütte, from the big and small Arber or from the Brennes.
