The Arber - King of the Bavarian Forest

Hiking in the Bavarian Forest

The King of the Bavarian Forest is with 1456 meters the highest mountain of this low mountain range. In summer a wonderful hiking area and in winter an El Dorado for skiers. A modern cable car brings winter sportsmen and also hikers comfortably to the top.

Demanding hiking trails from different sides also invite you to take varied hikes. Mountain climbers are rewarded with beautiful views from various points over the other Bavarian Forest mountains, into Bohemia and, if the weather is right, down to the Alps.

Just as beautiful is the view of the small Arbersee and from the lake wall at the Mittagsplatzl down to the Großer Arbersee. The two large, spherical radar towers make it possible to recognize the striking mountain at the end of the mountain range between Bad Kötzting and Bayerisch Eisenstein from far away.

In summer you can enjoy the particularly lush flora and in winter you can walk around in the icy wind between bizarre figures, the so-called "Arbermandeln". Every year, the great ski sport elite honors themselves on the ski slopes when championships and medals are being won.

Of course you don't have to go hungry on the Bayerwald King. Two inns leave nothing to be desired. Popular starting points are the Brennes at the valley station of the cable car, the Great Arbersee or the health resort Bodenmais. From here you can take the public bus to the valley station and from there hike over the mountain back to Bodenmais or take the cable car up when you want to save yourself the climb.
