The Kaitersberg

Hiking in the Bavarian Forest

For hikers one of the Bavarian Forest classics - the Kaitersberg. As a mighty barrier between the lovely Zellertal on the one side and the valley of the white rain and the Lamer Winkel on the other side, it arouses interest in every season.

At the same time, it offers the first two thousand meter peaks - the Kreuzfelsen and the Riedelstein. The starting point is usually the Bad Kötztinger district of Reitenberg at 760 meters or in the opposite direction at Gasthaus Eck (843 meters), which is located at the highest point of the connecting road between Arrach and Arnbruck. No matter in which direction you go, it is always a delicacy to walk this mountain.

If we walk from Reitenberg we pass the Räuber Heigl cave before we can enjoy the wonderful view from the Kreuzfelsen (999m) into the Zellertal, to Bad Kötzting and to the other Bavarian Forest mountains. About 30 minutes later we reach the mountain inn " Kötztinger Hütte". Here you can enjoy culinary delights or even take advantage of the overnight accommodation. From the terrace, the view widens out over the further course of the hiking trail to the Steinbühler Senke and on to the Großer Arber. Here the most beautiful part of the hike begins. In the Steinbühler Senke you can let your gaze wander into both valleys. The double peak of the Osser beyond the Lamer Winkel also comes into view. The end of this section is formed by the "smoke tubes". More or less free standing rock needles, which often attract the interest of climbers. We continue in the forest in the direction of Riedelstein (1132 meters), on the top of which the Waldschmidt - Monument can be found. A tribute to the Bavarian Forest poet Maximillian Schmidt. Our path leads a little below this worth seeing stone tower, after which climbing the Riedlstein peak can be seen as an option.

Shortly after, the descent begins above or next to the ski run down to the end point of the stage, the mountain inn on the Ecker Sattel.
